Victoria, British Columbia

One of Canada’s Finest Destination Cities

Although once referred to as a “little bit of old England,” Victoria, British Columbia has long been one of the country’s most exciting and attractive cities. Aside from its mild Mediterranean climate and superb natural setting that are the envy of most Canadians – especially in February during our flower count! – Victoria has a vibrant cultural life, great shopping, more than 700 restaurants, and a lively after-hours scene.

The Union Club is snugly tucked within Victoria’s compact, pedestrian-friendly historic downtown core, and our guests are just steps away from an array of attractions, including the world famous Royal BC Museum, handsome art galleries, a lively fisherman’s wharf, the country’s oldest Chinatown, several first-rate brewpubs, and many one-of-a-kind shops such as renowned Rogers’ Chocolates. Whale watchers in their yellow survival suits are a common sight near the Inner Harbour. And most visitors can’t resist the Butchart Gardens, whose 50 acres of unique floral extravagance makes it the province’s most popular tourist destination.

The nationally celebrated Pacific Opera Victoria has entered its fourth decade, while the Victoria Symphony has never sounded better. The city abounds with talented chamber music ensembles, and the Early Music Society of the Islands brings in an international roster of Baroque and pre-Baroque musicians. Dance Victoria presents national and international troupes, from the Royal Winnipeg Ballet to Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre. The numerous offerings of live theatre range from mainstage fare to edgier work in smaller venues. Victoria is also home to one of Canada’s oldest Fringe Festivals. The live music and club scenes are also buzzing, with everything from blues and jazz to rock, folk, and hip-hop. The spring and summer calendar is dotted with numerous musical festivals, with the 10-day JazzFest being the most notable; others encompass Caribbean soca to bluegrass, ska to indie pop.
